Jude was experiencing extreme technical frustration and needed a functional 2013 iMac restored to its former glory.

My goal was to offer a cost-effective solution by optimising the performance and storage efficiency of the existing machine rather than purchasing new hardware.

The Challenge

System Corruption: A large segment of the 1 TB hard drive was corrupted, erroneously categorising 700 GB as “Other” and leaving only 3 GB of usable space.

Boot Failures: The iMac was unable to enter standard Recovery Mode, preventing a simple factory reset.

Resource Constraints: The client had a strict budget and initial reservations regarding the time required for a complex repair.

Data Scale: Despite the system errors, approximately 300 GB of critical client data required a 12-hour backup process before any repair could begin.

The Solution

I implemented a multi-stage recovery strategy that combined deep technical troubleshooting with proactive system optimisation:

Bespoke Recovery Media: Created a custom bootable Mac OS recovery USB stick to bypass the corrupted onboard recovery partition.

Complete System Rebuild: Executed a full system wipe and Mac OS reinstallation after reformatting the USB stick to resolve compatibility issues.

Intelligent Data Migration: Performed a meticulous two-stage migration to restore 300 GB of data while ensuring the corrupted “Other” files were purged.

Cloud & Security Optimisation: Streamlined the software environment by migrating Dropbox files to iCloud and removing resource-heavy applications like Avast antivirus.

The Result

Jude expressed deep gratitude for the extensive support, acknowledging the excellent value they received for the fixed-cost repair.

The project successfully reclaimed 700 GB of storage and resolved all performance lag.

By the final session, the iMac was fully synchronised with iCloud, and the client was trained on how to manage their files across their iPad and desktop seamlessly.
