Janet de Vigne – Website and Branding

Janet de Vigne is a highly skilled professional with a rich, eclectic background spanning three distinct “strands”: academia, performance (acting and singing), and music composition. Having recently completed a 10-year PhD exploring negative lived experiences in secondary education through a Deleuzean lens (focusing on the justices of affect and serendipity), Janet had a wealth of valuable ideas to share. However, her digital presence was fragmented. Approaching her 62nd birthday, she sought a cohesive digital home that wasn’t merely a selling tool, but an authentic extension of her identity—reflecting her philosophy that “anything could happen in the next half hour.”

The Challenge

Janet needed a way to seamlessly present her diverse career paths without the site feeling disjointed. Her requirements included dedicated spaces for a podcast, a blog, and media recordings (including her Equity/Spotlight acting profile and classical/jazz singing). While she initially envisioned a dynamic turning animation to switch between these streams, this posed significant accessibility and mobile compatibility risks.

Furthermore, Janet faced technical hurdles in her day-to-day work. She struggled to manage multiple university accounts (alumnus and staff), lacked a professional digital infrastructure (such as a domain name and custom email), and simply did not have the time to navigate complex website development alongside her teaching, marking, and upcoming exhibitions.

The Solution

I engaged Janet through my “Personal Website & Branding” package, acting as both a web developer and an operational IT consultant. The project was structured as follows:

Strategic Content & Accessibility Planning: I advised against complex screen animations to ensure the website remained fully accessible and mobile-friendly. Instead, we structured the site like a beautifully designed, clean document that clearly separated her performance, academic, and musical streams.
Brand Identity Design: Before building the site, we established a brand framework that acted as a graphical extension of her personality, incorporating custom logos, fonts, and colours to be used across the site, her social media, and formal correspondence.
Technical Infrastructure: I handled the end-to-end technical setup, securing the domain janetdevigne.com and providing 24 months of upfront hosting. I set up a Microsoft 365 tenancy under her domain to handle her professional email (hello@janetdevigne.com) and cloud storage. This solution was specifically chosen because she was already familiar with Microsoft and preferred it over Google Workspace. I also provided training to ensure she was confident using the new system.
WordPress Development: I built a mobile-friendly WordPress site, equipping it with a newsletter subscription system and integrated CV downloads. I specifically audited her academic and performance CVs, removing personal details (home address and phone number) to ensure privacy, and adjusted calls-to-action to read “Contact Me” rather than “Schedule a Call” to better suit her approachable tone.
IT & Workflow Support: Beyond the website, I assisted Janet with her digital workflow by setting up separate browser profiles to resolve her university account conflicts, configuring WhatsApp Web on her work computer for streamlined feedback, and organising her new Microsoft 365 storage for asset management. Additionally, because her existing Windows laptop was proving difficult to use, I recommended purchasing a MacBook. Since she already owned an iPhone, this allowed her to take advantage of the Apple ecosystem—such as the Universal Clipboard, enabling seamless copy and paste between devices. She followed this recommendation and later described the MacBook as a “brilliant little machine”.

The Results

The collaboration successfully translated Janet’s multi-faceted career into a unified, professional digital home.

Cohesive Digital Presence: Janet now has a live, accessible website (janetdevigne.com) that elegantly showcases her academic research, theatrical performances, and musical recordings. She was also able to update other social platforms such as LinkedIn with her new branding assets.
Professionalised Communications: By migrating her to a custom domain email via Microsoft 365 and setting up automated newsletter confirmations, her public-facing communication is now highly professional, secure, and ready for audience growth.
Operational Clarity: Technical friction was eliminated through targeted IT support and a hardware upgrade to the Apple ecosystem, allowing Janet to seamlessly navigate her university systems and project communications.
Empowered Independence: Following 1-1 training on the WordPress interface and Microsoft 365, Janet is now fully equipped to update her blog, manage her files, and update her portfolio independently via mobile or desktop, freeing her from ongoing reliance on a developer.

By simplifying Janet’s digital infrastructure, guiding her towards intuitive hardware, and providing clear brand direction, she is now perfectly positioned to share her academic insights and creative talents with a wider audience.
